Uxbridge, ON – Longtime GAO volunteer George Shannon is the recipient of the Syl Apps Special Achievement Award at the 2009 Ontario Sport Awards, held April 15, 2010.
The Ontario Sport Awards recognize the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of our athletes, coaches, volunteers, and the corporate community. The Province of Ontario presents the Syl Apps Special Achievement Award annually to Ontario volunteers who have contributed to the development of sport throughout the province.
A Master Course Rater and Team Leader, George has been rating courses since 1992 and has rated more than 80 separate courses in his volunteer career with the GAO. The Atoka Golf Club member has been committed to providing his skills in his District (Huronia) and has also gone above and beyond to assist other Districts with their course rating needs.
George dedicates countless hours of work and extensive travel to his volunteer position, and has also served as a District Convener and Handicap Chair. George can also be seen volunteering his time as a starter and scorer at GAO championships throughout the summer months.
George spends his winters in Myrtle Beach but can always be counted on to appear at the Annual Can Am Matches between Ontario and South Carolina to support the Junior Boys and Girls who are representing Ontario.
George’s positive attitude and personality make him a pleasure to work with, and his unwavering devotion to the GAO is a prime example of what makes the GAO’s volunteer base strong and successful.
