Brooke Henderson Qualifies for U.S. Women’s Open


Fifteen-year-old Smiths Falls resident Brooke Henderson has qualified to play in the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open, set to take place June 27-30 at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

Henderson, who is currently ranked 34th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, shot rounds of 3-under 69 and 5-under 67 to tie for top spot in the qualifying event at Edgewood Country Club in River Vale, N.J. on Thursday.

She will join fellow Canadians Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John and fellow amateur Nicole Zhang of Calgary who have also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open.

In 2012, Henderson became the youngest competitor ever in the CN Canadian Women’s Open by winning a CN Canadian Women’s Tour event at Beloeil, Quebec. She recently finished with runner-up honours at another CN Women’s Tour event in Tsawwassen, B.C. In January, she was part of the four-player team that captured the Copa de las Americas trophy in Miami, and she also won the South American Amateur in Columbia. The grade 10 student is a two-time Ontario Junior Girls’ champion and won the Canadian Junior Girls’ title in 2012.
