Jennifer Kirby Wins CN Canadian Women’s Tour Event in Quebec
Cowansville, Que. (Golf Canada) – Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., carded a final round 2-under 70 to capture her first tournament as professional at the 2013 CN Canadian Women’s Tour stop at Club de Golf Cowansville in Cowansville, Que.
Kirby, 22, converted five birdies during her final round to finish with a two-day total of 5-under 139. She closed with three birdies over her final six holes to hold off Samantha Richdale, 29, of Kelowna, B.C., who had narrowed the lead to two strokes after a birdie on the 16th hole.
The recent University of Alabama graduate then birdied the 18th hole to earn her exemption into the 2013 CN Women’s Canadian Open at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, August 19-25.
“That’s awesome, that was definitely a little extra perk in winning and it was the goal to get into the CN Canadian Women’s Open somehow or other,” said Kirby. “It was nice to pull through this week and kind of get that done and it will be really fun to play again.”
The 2009 Royale Cup Canadian Amateur and Junior Champion had plenty of crowd support Wednesday with many of her former Team Canada teammates waiting for her at the 18th green. As a long-time member of Team Canada, Kirby commented on how much the program has helped her become the player she is.
“It was very special to have them all there when I was finishing,” she said. “They are just as much a part of my success as I am and they’ve really helped me get to this point, so it was awesome to see them there.”
Richdale, the 2013 CN Women’s Tour B.C. Champion, finished in solo second at 2-under 142 after a final round 72. The Symetra Tour player birdied three of her last four holes but couldn’t catch Kirby after missing the par-3 17th green.
Playing in the final group, Team Canada’s Brooke Henderson, 15, of Smiths Falls, Ont., finished as the low amateur at the tournament after a final round 1-under 71. Her second consecutive top-3 finish was highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 15th hole and left her at 1-under 143 for the tournament in solo third.
Lauren Mielbrecht, 26, of Gulf Stream, Fla., Elise Swartout, 25, of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Team Canada’s Brittany Marchand, 20, of Orangeville, Ont., finished tied for fourth even-par 144 for the tournament.
