Thornton, ON – The weather was not in our favour for day two of the 2021 Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ and Girls’ Match Play Championship. With heavy rain through the night, we were extremely lucky to have playable conditions today at Tangle Creek G&CC. Throughout 36-holes of golf for both the boys and girls, the rain continued and the temperature decreased, creating challenging conditions for the Round of 16 and Quarter-Final round.

The action got underway at 8:00 a.m. with the Boys Match Play taking to the course first for the Round of 16. The Quarter-Final round took to the course at 1:00 p.m., with players continuing to battle the weather conditions. Making it through to the Semi-Final round is Luke Smith (The Thornhill Club), Ethan Irvine (Hamilton G&CC), Andreas Diogenous (Whistle Bear GC), and Owen Kim (Blue Springs GC). Kim has won both the Ontario Juvenile Boys and Ontario Junior Boys Spring Classic Championship in 2021, while Diogenous is Kim’s teammate on Team Ontario and Smith claimed runner-up at the 2021 Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys Championship.

The Girls Match Play teed off at 9:04 a.m., with the Round of 16 taking place first. Weather conditions made for a slow round, pushing the Quarter-Final round to 2:05 p.m.. The girls had to hustle in the Round of 8 as the final match got underway at 3:06 p.m.. With all four matches completing just before dark, the competitors advancing to the Semi-Final round tomorrow include Alissa Xu (Station Creek GC), Sarah Gallagher (Blue Springs GC), Myranda Quinton (Blue Springs GC), and Lindsay McGrath (Rattlesnake Point GC). McGrath is the 2021 Ontario Bantam (U15) Girls’ Champion, while Xu and Gallagher are both Team Ontario athletes.

Action from the Semi-Final round starts at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, with the Boys teeing it up first. The Girls take to the course at 8:16 a.m.. The Final round will take place later in the afternoon at approximately 1 pm, with official tee times to be found on our Golf Genius pages.
