2020 Ontario Public Amateur Championship, Presented by Baka Mobile, Teeing Up at Meadowbrook GC Sept 1st to 2nd

Gormley, ON – As summer slowly slips away, we prepare to tee up the Ontario Public Amateur Championship, presented by Baka Mobile, at Meadowbrook Golf Club from September 1st to 2nd. For many competitors, this is their first experience competing in a Golf Ontario championship while others are seasoned veterans. The Baka Public Championship provides the perfect opportunity for those interested in trying a competitive tournament, while providing gross and net flights which provide similar handicap groupings.

Open only to players of the Golf Ontario Public Player Program and members of a semi-public golf course, the championship will see players compete in three separate flights. Players in the A flight will compete in a gross competition, while the B and C flights will compete in a net competition. Players in the B flight will also be eligible for the overall A flight, as they play off the same tees.

The classic championship parkland golf course is a great experience for golfers of all levels, as the 153 acre property features flawless bentgrass greens, tactically placed bunkers, and a series of flowing brooks and dangerously positioned water hazards. Head Professional of Meadowbrook Golf Club, Sheldon Friske, describes the course as “a first shot golf course. If you put the ball in the fairway off the tee, you have a clear shot to the green. Miss the fairway by a little bit and there’s some bunkering and trees around the greens that you’ll have to deal with. The rough is also thick enough that it will affect the second shot, even if only off by a foot”. Right off the start, players can expect “a challenging tee shot as we flipped the nines this year, making for a very challenging first hole”.

With three previous Public Amateur Champions returning to the field, they will be battling for the chance to add another name plate to the trophy. Returning players include 2013 winner, Dan Kavanagh (Scarborough), 2014 winner, Peter Willis (Aurora), and 2011 and 2015 winner, Arnold Johnson (Brampton).

We are also excited to have introduced a Front Line Workers donation program this year as part of our registration process, to give back to the local communities we will be playing in. The Front Line Workers donations from the Baka Public Amateur Championship will be donated to Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation.

First tee off of the day for round one on September 1st is set for 7:30 a.m. To follow the leaderboard, click here.

Cambridge Golf Club to Host the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ & Girls’ Championship

Cambridge, ON – Taking to the course from August 31st to September 1st at Cambridge Golf Club, Golf Ontario will welcome the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship. This championship will also see Golf Ontario crown a winner for the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship.

Cambridge Golf Club is a “mature golf course with beautifully manicured fairways and greens, with two new holes that have been back in play for the last two seasons”, said Head Professional at Cambridge Golf Club, Carla Munch-Miranda, when asked to describe the course. “Being a mature golf course, it is a little tighter now, so players need to be on their game and be sure of their placement on the tee”, as the long narrow fairways offer a challenge before the defensive greens come into play. In viewing the course layout, players will find that hole six is rated the hardest hole on the course, with bunkers and fescue surrounding the green. Having hosted one of the Junior (U19) Boys’ qualifiers in July, our “volunteers are ready and the members are excited to host the event and be a part of the championship atmosphere”.

The Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ Championship will consist of athletes from the following two qualifiers: Sawmill Golf Club (August 14) and Lakeridge Links Golf Club (August 26). For leaderboard information on qualifiers, please click the golf course name. Golf Ontario will also recognize the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ Champion at this competition. The field of 54 Boys’ is expected to be strong, as the winner of the 2019 Ontario Peewee Boys’ Championship, Jordan Hwang (York Downs G&CC), looks to challenge the winners of the qualifiers for the championship title.

As for the Ontario Bantam (U15) Girls’ Championship, it will consist of athletes from the following two qualifiers: Sawmill Golf Club (August 14) and Lakeridge Links Golf Club (August 26). Golf Ontario will also recognize the Ontario Peewee (U13) Girls’ Champion at this competition. Impressive Win for Cranston to Take Home the Ontario Juvenile (U17) & Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship Titles

Melancthon, ON – It was a spectacular day for the final round of the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship at Shelburne Golf and Country Club. With the weather on everyone’s side today, the players looked to finish their final round on a high note and take advantage of the sun and the calm winds. Both the Ontario Juvenile (U17) and Junior (U19) Girls’ Champions were recognized at today’s award ceremony.

Heading home with very full hands, the 2020 Ontario Juvenile and Junior Girls’ Champion is Team Ontario member Katie Cranston (Oakville GC). Cranston carded a two-over 74 on the final day, to finish a stellar week of golf at 6-under par 282, for an impressive 4 stroke victory. While reflecting on the title and today’s round, Cranston said “I can’t complain, it was pretty good but I had a rough start. I started with three bogeys and then I birdied four, so after that I started to believe in myself more and thought that this is possible”. When asked how it feels to win not only her first title, but two titles at once, Cranston replied ecstatically “it feels amazing! I have two more years to compete in Junior, so I’m really looking forward to the 2021 season”.

A strong group of Juvenile (U17) players dominated the (U19) leaderboard this week, as Nicole Gal (Oakville GC) takes home the silver with a final round 70  to finish the week a 2-under (286), and Jillian A Friyia (Highland CC) and Rozlyn Rooke (Blue Springs GC) shared the bronze in a three-way tie (289) with Junior (U19) player, Raesa Sheikh (TPC at Osprey Valley).

Devoted owner, designer, and builder of Shelburne Golf and Country Club, Sam Young, said “it was a pleasure to host this event and I think it was truly important to have it. Thank you Golf Ontario for giving me a call, as I was happy to step up to the plate and get things going here. I am very impressed with these athletes as they played great golf this week. I have a bunch of ten year old girls to teach tonight, so I’ll be a little more inspired”. In an interview following the awards ceremony, Young expressed his appreciation for the junior golfers, saying “it’s so different from when I got into the business many years ago, as more girls’ are athletes now. They all conducted themselves so well, that it was almost like you were watching a mini LGPA tour. They really handle themselves well and can they ever hit it, like really hit it!” The Ontario and Professional Golf Association of Canada Hall of Famer, Sam Young, has coached the likes of Brittany Marchand and Augusta James.

Golf Ontario would like to thank the players, staff, and volunteers for their support of the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship. To Shelburne Golf and Country Club, Owner Sam Young and Superintendent Brooks Young, and all their hard-working staff, thank you for being gracious hosts on such a well conditioned course. A big thank you to the volunteers, as you are extremely valuable and we appreciate the time you take out of your week to assist. Lastly, a huge thank you to our sponsors and partners, Adidas, Taylor Made, BioSteel, Modern Golf, Dormie Workshop, Durham Artificial Grass, Humber College, Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort, Baka Mobile, and Play Golf Myrtle Beach. We are grateful for your continued support.

Cranston Keeps Lead After Round 3 of the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship

Melancthon, ON – Round three presented the players with more windy conditions, as everyone at the Ontario Junior (U19) Girl’s Championship looked to make some moves. When the weather finally warmed up at Shelburne Golf and Country Club, just four groups remaining on the back nine, and it seemed the damage had already been done as most of the field struggled to gain strokes on the leaderboard in today’s round.

Unaffected by the wind, Katie Cranston (Oakville GC) completed a solid round while remaining at the top of the leaderboard with an overall score of eight under par (208). Sitting in second is the round one leader, Nicole Gal (Oakville GC), after a plus three round thanks to some tougher greens.

Climbing the leaderboard in a tie for third is Lauren Zaretsky (Ladies GC of Toronto) and Rozlyn Rooke (Blue Springs GC). Shooting a one under and even par, the players both finished off with four birdies and three bogeys. Reflecting on today’s round, Rooke said “I feel like I was more focused both mentally and physically today. I zoned in on my shots and even though the wind was difficult at times, most of my drives were pretty good. I was able to focus on how far I wanted to carry the ball and where I wanted it to end up”. Rooke is looking to carry the same positive energy heading into the final round tomorrow.

The final round of the Ontario Junior (U19) Girl’s Championship begins at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. Follow along with Golf Ontario on Instagram as we go live with the leaders group on eighteen. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official championship page here.

Cranston & Mitchell with Impressive Rounds on Day Two of the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship

Melancthon, ON – Sunny skies and cool air welcomed the girl’s back to round two of the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship at Shelburne Golf and Country Club. Dealing with better conditions today, the players battled for a spot in the top 42 plus ties before the cut headed into round three.

With lots of movement on the leaderboard, Katie Cranston (Oakville GC) and Nicole Gal (Oakville GC) switched positions, with Cranston taking the lead and Gal dropping to second. Cranston shot an impressive round of 68 with five birdies (139), while Gal’s two birdies helped to leave her three under par for the round. With Sarah Gallagher (Blue Springs GC) holding her position in a tie for second with a consistent round, Team Ontario members still hold the top spots on the leaderboard.

When asked if the strategy changed from round one, Cranston commented “I didn’t really change my strategy too much. I was more confident on the par fives and went for most of them, committed to my shot, and didn’t layup”. A big difference from yesterday that most of the players mentioned was the wind, as “the wind is really tough to judge at Shelburne because you can’t tell from where you’re standing. The decks are surrounded by trees, so until your ball is in the air, it’s pretty hard to judge”.

Blazing their way into the top five, Kirsty Mitchell (Station Creek GC – North) climbed 35 spots on the leaderboard after a shooting a remarkable round of 66 for the day. Heading into round two, Mitchell said “I was trying to take it less serious today after a bad first round yesterday. I focused more on my game today and just went with it”. When asked if she felt like she was too in her head yesterday, Mitchell replied with “well I think that I just really want to play well for myself, so I try to work too hard sometimes. I need to let my practice speak for me more and trust myself”. After shooting eight birdies, it seems that Mitchell may have found the calm that her game needed.

The third round begins at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official championship page here.

Team Ontario Holding the Top 3 Spots on the Leaderboard after Round 1 of the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship

Melancthon, ON – Ominous grey clouds and windy conditions greeted the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship this morning at Shelburne Golf and Country Club. With the sun trying to poke through all day over Shelburne, competitors are hoping that Mother Nature is good to them for the rest of the week.

The strong field is not only currently being led by three Team Ontario members, but by three Juvenile (U17) Girls’. Taking the lead in round one, Nicole Gal (Oakville GC) had a solid start with five birdies, leaving her sitting two under par. Tied for second, Sarah Gallagher (Blue Springs GC) and Katie Cranston (Oakville GC) will start off round two sitting one shot back. Positioned in fourth place also in a two-way tie on the leaderboard, Jacqueline Giles (Eagle Ridge GC) and Vanessa Borovilos (Weston G&CC), played a very consistent round with an even par for the day.

In preparation for the championship, Gal said “I had three practice rounds, two with my teams and one on my own to get more of an idea of the pin placement and greens. In terms of my play today I think everything went pretty well, as my long game and chipping were good which helped me get some birdies. My round today was definitely my most consistent of the season”. When asked what her game plan is going into round two, Gal commented “there’s not too much to switch up. I think I’ll take my time a bit more and commit to the line on my putt, as I left a few out there today. The plan is to keep is simple and consistent”.

The second round will begin at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official championship page here.

Cougar Claws his way to Victory at Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship

Otterville, ON – Beautiful sunny conditions ushered in today’s final round for the 98th annual Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship. It was a very competitive field throughout the entire week, and today’s round was no different with the Championship coming down to the last few windy holes to determine the 2020 champion.

Clawing his way to victory down the final stretch was Golf Canada Amateur Squad Member, Cougar Collins, with an even par round (72) to finish the Championship at 2-under. He got some help from second and third round leader Robbie Latter (Credit Valley G&CC), who stumbled just slightly down the back stretch and lost the lead after a double bogey on 13. Latter impressively fought back to remain tied with Collins until the seventeenth where he would drop a shot once again. Latter finished at 5-over (77) on the day, and a bogey on the 18th would help secure Collins the victory. Tied for second with Latter was Thomas Giroux (North Club of Halton), who finished the day and the week with a solid even par.

After today’s exciting win, Collins (TPC at Osprey Valley), spoke about his play “definitely not the start I was looking for, but I battled back pretty quick with birdies on the second and third holes”. He felt his swing and iron shots were very solid which helped him through the battling of leaders on the back nine.

He also spoke on what the Championship meant to him, saying “This is definitely at the top of my career accomplishment, this was pretty awesome for sure… especially being in Ontario and being my first time on Team Canada and winning the Ontario Amateur ”. Collins joins some phenomenal talent and names including Garrett Rank (2018), 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir (1990 & 1992), Gerry Kesselring (1949, 1951, 1952, 1953), professional players Jon Mills (2001), Corey Conners (2010), Albin Choi (2012), Chris Hemmerich (2014) and Gary Cowan, who holds the record for the most Ontario Amateur Championships with nine.

Golf Ontario would like to thank the players, staff, and volunteers for their support of the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship. To Otter Creek Golf Club, and all their hard-working staff, thank you for being gracious hosts and for providing us with such valuable volunteers. Lastly, a huge thank you to our sponsors and partners, Adidas, Taylor Made, Modern Golf, Dormie Workshop, Durham Artificial Grass, Humber College, Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort, Baka Mobile, and Play Golf Myrtle Beach. Latter Stays Leader after Round 3 of Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek GC

Otterville, ON – Round 3 brought us a beautiful and calm morning as players looked to make some noise on moving day at the 98th Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek Golf Club. The weather warmed up, as did the competition, in a day that produced the lowest scores yet. Multiple players went low in hopes of taking over the lead from Robbie Latter but your second round leader had plans of his own.

Remaining the Championship leader is Robbie Latter (Credit Valley G&CC) who fired a stellar 3-under (69) round including 5 birdies and an eagle to now sit 5-under overall after three days. Hot on his heels however is Cougar Collins (TPC at Osprey Valley) who fired the competitions best round of 6-under (66) so far through three days. Collins now sits 2-under on the tournament and in second place after setting the pace with an eagle on the third hole. Also firing a tremendous round was Thomas Giroux (The North Club of Halton) who finds himself in third place at even par. Giroux went as low as 7-under on his round before finishing up at a tidy 4-under (66).

After today’s play, Latter (a former member of Team Ontario), said “ ya I got off to a rough start, but quickly got it back on the front nine so I kept rolling and playing aggressive”. He felt his putting got him back on track after rolling in some birdies on 4, 6, 7, and 9. He stated his game plan for the final round is “just stay aggressive, keep hitting it,…that’ll be the important thing”.

Final round tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. and if today was an indication of the scoring we could see tomorrow, the final round looks like it could to be very exciting. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official page here.

Latter takes charge in Round 2 of Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek GC

Otterville, ON – A cool, calm morning kicked off round 2 of the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek Golf Club. The temperature would quickly rise, as did the play of the players, in an exciting day on this 98th playing of the prestigious competition. We had many more players in red numbers today with calmer winds and players learning the course.

Taking the lead today with a stellar bogey free round was Robbie Latter (Credit Valley G&CC) who now leads the Championship with his strong four-under round today, including 4 birdies. Latter now sits at two-under overall after two days for a 2 shot lead. Charles Fitzsimmons (Thornhill Club) and local favorite Peyton Callens (Otter Creek GC) both fired solid 3-under pars today to follow closely behind at even par total after two rounds. Jackson Bowery (St Thomas G&CC) and Thomas Code (Highland CC) sit four strokes back with two round totals of 2 over.

Round two leader, Latter (a former member of Team Ontario), said after “my round felt really solid, having no bogeys and no real hiccups…it all just came together”. When asked about his game plan for moving forward in this highly touted competition, Latter reflected “just keep it going, keep rolling… this is really cool as it’s the Provincial Amateur Championship, which has always been a goal of mine”. Latter is currently heading into his second year at Southern Mississippi, Majoring in Business Administration after spending two seasons with Team Ontario.

After Golf Ontario makes the cut tonight down to 42nd and ties, tee times for the third round begin Thursday at 7:30 a.m. With 17 golfers within 6 shots of the leader, it should be a very interesting last 2 days of the championship.
