Otterville, ON – Windy conditions welcomed the players to the challenging Otter Creek Golf Club for the first round of the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship. Thankfully early cool and breezy weather warmed up as did the competition on the opening day. Living up to expectations, the first day proved to be very competitive, with eleven players within three strokes of the lead.
Leading the pack, however, after day one was David Lang (Donalda Club) who fired a solid one under to take a one stroke lead into round 2. Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club), Kyle Chung (Brampton GC), Thomas Code (Highland CC), Jonathan Cranton (Donalda Club), Nathan Kraynyk (Eagles Nest GC) and Arnold Johnson (Public Player) all sit tied in second place, one shot back after each scoring a solid even par round.
Round one leader, Lang, commented after “You know what I played pretty good, it’s a tough golf course so I was pretty happy that I grinded hard out there and after a couple bad shots, was still able to make a few good par saves to keep my round going including a long one putt on 16”. When asked what his game plan for round two consisted of, Lang reflected “just keep playing the same way. My game plan was to hit a lot fairways and greens as you can easily hit double and triple bogeys out there”. Going into round two tomorrow, Lang tees off at 8:14 a.m. and is looking to continue his steady play.
Tee times for the second round begin Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official championship page here.

Otterville, ON – Heading into our third of nine championships, Golf Ontario is thrilled to welcome the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship to Otter Creek Golf Club from August 11th to 14th.
Designed by renowned Canadian Golf Course architect Dick Kirkpatrick, Otter Creek Golf Club opened its doors to the public on July 1, 2008. Measuring just over 7,100 yards and featuring six sets of tees, Otter Creek was designed to challenge players of all skill levels. Golf Manager, John Hall, said “they can expect a challenge that’s for sure! Players will need creativity around the greens, as they have a lot of angulation and slopes. The toughest hole here is typically the ninth, with a long par four straight up a hill and a big ravine right in front of the green. Another one to watch for that players always talk about after the round is the tough par three on number twelve”. Otter Creek has hosted quite a few qualifiers and tours, but with the bustling season they’ve been experiencing, they are very excited to welcome players, volunteers, and staff for the championship.
The Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship will consist of athletes from the following four qualifiers: Tangle Creek GC (July 16), Black Bear Ridge GC (July 20), Shelburne G&CC (July 21), and Grand Niagara GC (July 22). For leaderboard information on qualifiers, please click the golf course name.
Due to a limitation to field sizes with Golf Ontario safety protocols, a maximum of 114 players will be battling for the title. The field is expected to be exceptionally strong with the likes of 2018/2020 Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ Champion, Nolan Piazza (Cherry Hill Club), and 2019 Ontario Men’s Amateur runner-up Charles Fitzsimmons (Thornhill Club) battling for the title. Some other players to keep an eye on are Ontario Golf Hall of Famer Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club), Team Canada National Amateur Squad member Cougar Collins (Rocky Crest GC), and former National Hockey League player Michael Cammalleri (The National Club of Canada). Cammalleri played in the National Hockey League from 2002 to 2018, most recently playing for the Edmonton Oilers, and won the final Men’s Amateur qualifier at Grand Niagara Golf Club.
Team Ontario members competing include: Ashton McCulloch (Cataraqui GC), Ben MacLean (St. Catherine’s G&CC), LukeDelGobbo (Lookout Point GC), Jeffrey Fang (Station Creek GC – North), Michael Ikejiani (Barrie CC), and Thomas Latter (Credit Valley GC).
We are also excited to have introduced a Front Line Workers donation program this year as part of our registration process, to give back to the local communities we will be playing in. The Front Line Workers donations from the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship will be donated to The Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Foundation.
First tee off of the day for round one on August 11th is set for 7:30 a.m. To follow the leaderboard, click here.

Dalewood, ON – Lots of sunshine, smiles and great play were found on the course today for the fourth and final round of the Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship from Dalewood Golf Club. With the Women’s Mid-Amateur title awarded to Nonie Marler (Public Player) following the end of round three yesterday, today the players battled for the Women’s Amateur Championship.
Sealing the deal with four consistent rounds of golf, Michigan State University golfer, Sydney Naro (Public Player), takes home the Ontario Women’s Amateur crown with an even par to end the championship (285). In a great fight for the silver and bronze, Brooke Rivers (Brampton GC) and Kristen Giles (Eagle River GC), went stroke for stroke most of the round with Rivers prevailing to finish second, one stroke behind Naro. Giles finished 2 shots off the pace for her third place finish. With three late birdies down the stretch, Rivers really put pressure on Naro to hang on to the lead. Giles also had a birdie streak of her own down the back nine but just like Rivers, couldn’t quite catch the leader.
“The conditions were a lot calmer, so there was definitely a chance for a lot of birdies out there. I just tried to play my game one shot at a time and it worked out pretty well”, said Naro when asked what made the difference for the final round today. As a varsity golfer for Michigan State, Naro plays “out of Forest Akers West when in Michigan, but in Canada, I play out of Windermere Golf and Country Club”. When asked if any holes were more challenging than others, Naro explained “the par threes are definitely very long and I’d say number ten was a tough one. I was trying to make birdie all week and couldn’t make birdie on number ten. Number one was a little scary as it’s a long hole, but other that than I really liked the course and had a lot of fun”.
Golf Ontario would like to thank the players, staff, and volunteers for their support of the Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship. To Dalewood Golf Club, Head Golf Professional Brad Pemberton, and all their hard-working staff, thank you for being gracious hosts and for providing us with such valuable volunteers. Lastly, a huge thank you to our sponsors and partners, Adidas, Taylor Made, Modern Golf, Dormie Workshop, Durham Artificial Grass, Humber College, Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort, Baka Mobile, and Play Golf Myrtle Beach. We are grateful for your continued support.

Dalewood, ON – With the third and final round coming to an end for the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Dalewood Golf Club, Public Player Nonie Marler (Marine Drive GC) took home the prestigious title. The weather couldn’t have been more welcoming today, especially after the rain delays and wind we’ve experienced earlier in the week.
Three near flawless rounds left Marler in a great position for today’s win, with four birdies on the day (218). Climbing the leaderboard in the final round, Terrill Samuel (Weston G&CC), played her best round of the championship finishing with one under par (222). Falling to third, 2017 Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion Judith Kyrinis (Granite GC), completed the day with a tough 76 (224).
“The conditions were certainly interesting and as it dried out over the course of the last couple of days, the greens sped up and it’s been great to be out here”, said Marler while reflecting on the rounds. With the circumstances surrounding Covid, we are dealing with “very interesting times so it’s an absolute pleasure and honour to be able to play actual tournament golf at the moment, and certainly for the last couple of days in the company of Judith. Judith and I played together last summer in the Canadian Mid-Amateur’s, so it’s nice to be able to play with her again; Terrill as well and then Lindsay today”. In closing, “Rob (Watson) thank you much, you and your team, you guys were fantastic and you have done a great job here so far in spite of these very interesting times. To Brad, his guys and gals in the pro shop, and Jerry Fox the Super Intendent and his crew, thank you very much. A big thank you to the many volunteers who took the time out of their week to assist with this event as well. All in all, thank you for letting a Vancouverite play with you ladies this week!”
With one more round to go for the Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship, sitting atop the leaderboard is Michigan State University golfer, Sydney Naro (Public Player), with consistent play over the three rounds (214). Tied for second place currently is Kristen Giles (Eagle Ridge GC), Claire Hernandez (Thornhill Club), and Brooke Rivers (Brampton GC). Giles moved up the rankings today with a solid three under par (69), while Hernandez and Rivers respectfully maintained their position.
The fourth and final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official championship page here.

Dalewood, ON – The start of round two came with sunshine and clear skies at Dalewood Golf Club for the Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship. Due to the severe weather delays experienced yesterday, eleven groups resumed round one at 8:00 a.m. and round two was pushed back an hour to an 8:30 a.m. start. I had a good game plan and committed to my shots more”. She added, “I had one practice round under my belt and having the first round with two rounds now, I felt like I knew the course a lot better today to be able to give myself the best opportunity possible and really capitalize on it”.
Climbing the leaderboard of the Women’s Amateur Championship is GO Public Player, Sydney Naro, with one under on the front and two over on the back, for an overall one over through 2 rounds (142). Dalewood, ON – While we know the golf courses needed rain, today was not the ideal day for our ladies to see it happen. As the weather continued to prevail, Dalewood Golf Club welcomed the 2020 Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship for their opening round of four.
With a 3.5 hour weather delay at 9:30 a.m., play resumed at 1:15 p.m. only to be postponed again at 7:30 p.m… After the first weather delay, number eight was removed from play due to an excess of water flooding on the green. Because of the lengthened weather delay, eleven groups (11:32 a.m. to 1:22 p.m.) did not finish their first round. Tomorrow morning will resume play at 8:00 a.m. with the players who did not finish their round today.
Currently leading is Claire Hernandez, (Thornhill Club) sitting at 2 under including four birdies on her round. In a tie for second at one under, we have five players; Sarah Beqaj (Toronto GC), Madeline Marck-Shrek (Bridgewater CC), Nicole Gal (Oakville GC), Ava Koukofikas (Meadowbrook G&CC), and Alessandra Nagayo (Don Valley GC). Hall of Famer Judith Kyrinis (Granite GC), currently leads in the Mid-Amateur category after a plus one round with much golf still left to play.
Pushing back an hour back to allow for round one to finish, round two will being at 8:30 a.m. Follow the full leaderboard here.

Dalewood, ON – Teeing off the start of August, Golf Ontario is excited to welcome the Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship to Dalewood Golf Club from August 4th to 7th.
Designed by renowned Canadian architect C.E. Robbie Robinson, Dalewood Golf Club is a premiere 18-hole championship golf course. The par 71 course offers a well-groomed, picturesque setting with over 50 bunkers and 3 ponds located on the course, with Gages Creek coming into play on several holes. As a first-time host of the Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship, Head Golf Professional of Dalewood Golf Club, Brad Pemberton, said “it’s always a privilege to host championships on our property and we are thrilled to welcome the top Women players in the province here”. Pemberton continued to say “it’s a challenging course, especially with the creek that passes through about a dozen times. The greens are big, some as large as 50 yards back to back, so accurate iron play and putting will be key”.
Due to a limitation to field sizes with Golf Ontario safety protocols, a maximum of 90 players will be battling for the top spot. The field is expected to be exceptionally strong with winner of the 2018 Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, Julia Hodgson (Donalda GC), and 2017 champion, Judith Kyrinis (Granite GC), expected to return to defend the title. Team Ontario members to keep an eye on include: Sarah Beqaj (Toronto GC), Bo Brown (Blue Springs GC), Katie Cranston (Oakville GC), Nicole Gal (Oakville GC), Sarah Gallagher (Blue Springs GC), Alexis McMurray (Glen Abbey GC), and Ella Weber (Rattlesnake Point GC).
We are also excited to have introduced a Front Line Workers donation program this year as part of our registration process, to give back to the local communities we will be playing in. The Front Line Workers donations from the Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship will be donated to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.
First tee off of the day for round 1 on August 4th is set for 7:30 a.m. To follow the leaderboard, click here.

Southampton, ON – The pristine, but challenging Saugeen Golf Club was the perfect stage to host the first Golf Ontario championship of the 2020 season. With an impressive finish in his fourth and final round, Nolan Piazza (Cherry Hill Club) took home the Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ Championship title for the second time in 3 years. Winning the Ontario Juvenile (U17) Boys’ Championship title was Andreas Diogenous (Whistle Bear GC).
Finishing on a high note, Piazza saved the best for last with his most outstanding round of the championship. Ending with a sizzling score of six-under (66) for the round, Piazza birdied seven holes, offset by only 1 bogey on the day. Piazza finished the championship at 14-under (274), 10 shots clear of the next competitor. Diogenous, en route to his Juvenile championship, also played his best round yet, carding a final round four-under to tie for second in the Junior (U19) Boys’ division. Sharing second place was Kiefer Bulau (King Valley GC), who climbed four spots on the day with a final round 68, including six birdies.
“It feels really good to win the Junior Boys’ Championship for a second time”, said Piazza when asked how this win feels. Remarkably, the last time the title was won twice by the same player was in 2004 and 2006 by Brad Revell (Cataraqui G&CC). Piazza has one more year to compete in the Junior (U19) Boys’ division, as he commented he’d “like to try for a third win again next year. I didn’t really change anything today with my play. My short and long game were both clicking today, but my putts were falling into place better which was good to see”. When asked if playing in a grouping with round two leaders, Ty Stansfield (Thornhill Club) and Yuqi Liu (The Country Club – West), helped improve his competitive play, Piazza said “it was fun to be with them, as we were all low key about it today. No one was too serious about it and we were just out there having fun”. Piazza has been putting in the work, having played around sixty-five rounds already this year.
Winner of the 2019 Ontario Bantam Boys’ Championship title, Diogenous can now add the Ontario Juvenile (U17) Boys’ Championship title to his collection. His final round 68 left him 2 shots ahead of 2nd and 3rd round leader Ty Stansfield, and Owen Kim, whose 67 today propelled him into the tie with Stansfield, with the two of them sharing a tie for fourth in the Junior (U19) boys’ championship.
“It feels great to have three championship titles to my name now”, said Diogenous as he reflected on his Ontario Peewee Boys’ (2017) and Bantam Boys’ (2019) Championship titles. “It’s really exciting and now I have one more to go with a couple shots at the U19 title hopefully”. With his best round of the championship today, Diogenous said “coming down the stretch my putter was getting a little hot. I birdied 16 and 17 which put me in a good spot coming in. I was hitting iron shots more at the pins instead of playing for the middle of the greens, I was more aggressive, and made some good putts”.

Southampton, ON – The competition thickened as round three came to a close for the 2020 Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ Championship at Saugeen Golf Club. The mix of sun, cloud, and wind today seemed to have no influence on the performance of our two leaders, as they maintained their position at the top of our leaderboard.
Sharing the lead after round three, Junior Boys’ Nolan Piazza (Cherry Hill Club) and Yuqi Liu (The Country Club – West) finished today with an overall eight under (208). Piazza sunk five birdies and three bogeys, to finish the front an even par and the back at two under (70). Also sinking five birdies, Liu finished with two bogeys, one under on the front, and two under on the back (70). Sitting in third is Ty Stansfield, who will be playing in the final group with Piazza and Liu. Falling to fourth on the leaderboard, Team Ontario athlete Ashton McCulloch (Cataraqui G&CC) completed the day with two under in total, one over on the front, and an even par on the back (73).
Completing round three in a group with the 2018 and 2019 Junior (U19) Boys’ Champions Piazza and McCulloch, Liu said “they played pretty strong and I had fun playing with them. Today my long game and putting were very good, and I played a lot better on the par fives. As the wind picked up, my distance control with my wedge was not great when hitting into the wind. The ball had too much spin and it rolled backwards several times after landing”. Heading into round four tomorrow, Liu said “I’m looking forward to playing in a group with Piazza and Stansfield. I didn’t get the chance to watch him play today, but I heard pretty early into today’s round that he made four birdies in a row. It will be a good group for competitive play.”
With an impressive showing on the front, Juvenile player Ty Stansfield (Thornhill Club) started the day with 4 straight birdies, en-route to a one-under 71 to keep him atop the Juvenile leaderboard (213). Sitting in second for the Juvenile division, Matthew Martel (Lookout Point) fired an impressive 3-under par 69 to vault him up the leaderboard, now 2 strokes behind Stansfield. In third for the Juvenile Boys’ and in a three-way tie for sixth overall, Andreas Diogenous (Whistle Bear GC) carded a one-under on both the front and back for a 3 day total of even par (216).
The fourth and final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official championship page here.

Southampton, ON – A beautifully sunny day greeted the players for round two of the Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ Championship at Saugeen Golf Club. The competitive field continued to score low, with plenty of ties keeping the field tight. This evening, Golf Ontario will cut the field down to 42 plus ties.
The Junior (U19) Boys’ saw a switch in leaders, as Nolan Piazza (Cherry Hill Club) overtook the round one leader Yuqi Liu (The Country Club – West). Piazza completed his front nine two under and then went one under on the back, to finish off round two with a 69 (138). Liu fell to second place on the leaderboard with a second round 71 (139) to finish day 2 one stroke behind Piazza. (139). Following a strong 69 yesterday, Ashton McCulloch (Cataraqui G&CC) finshed at even par 72 for the day (141), holding onto third-place – 3 shots back of the leader.
Heading into round three, Piazza said “I’m going to keep hitting the same type of shots and hopefully sink more putts, but just keep it simple. From my practice rounds and round one, I’ve been hitting all the same clubs off the tees and have been focused on hitting the fairways and greens. I would say my long game has been better this week, but I’ve missed a few makeable putts”. Agreeing with most players, “the par threes are a little difficult as they’ve been giving everyone a hard time. As well, number twelve is a hard driving hole, and probably fifteen as well.”
As for the Juvenile Boys’, Ben MacLean (St. Catharines G&CC) fell to second on the leaderboard with three over on the front and one under on the back, finishing with 74 (144). Taking the lead was Ty Stansfield (Thornhill Club), with an even par on the front and an impressive four under on the back for a 4-under 68 (142). Tied for second with MacLean is Ellis Kinnaird (Mississippi), who fired a one-over 73 to follow up his opening round 71 (144).
With a strong round two, Stansfield said “I was pretty happy with my game today, and I’m looking to take the same game plan into round three tomorrow. I changed my game up a bit from yesterday, as I tried to hit more fairways off the tee to position myself better. I’ve been using a lot of irons and three woods to leave myself in a good position”.
Tee time for the third round is set for 7:30 a.m. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official championship page here.
