SCARBOROUGH— The 2016 Ada Mackenzie matches took place May 9 and 10 from the Cedar Brae Golf Club in Scarborough. Ontario was looking to repeat as champions when the team from New York State came to Ontario for this year’s edition of the Matches. When all was said and done, Ontario would have little trouble defending the title as they took the 2016 championship by a total score of 17.5 to 2.5.
Day one began with Chapman format matches worth one point each. Ontario got out to an early advantage winning the first two matches outright. Gail Pimm and Debbie Court earned a point in their match, as did Mary Ann Hayward and Kelly Koselek. Jane Hedges-McKinnon and Allyson Harrison split their match, but Ontario would come back and take the remaining two. First, Judith Kyrinis and Marion Reid picked up a victory and then Sarah-Anne Smurlick and Ivy Steinberg closed out their contest with a win. It meant that Ontario had a 4.5-.5 lead heading into the second and final round.
The final round was Better-Ball matches each being worth three points, meaning the title was still very much up for grabs. Ontario continued to roll early on as they took the first two matches out right. The teams of Court and Reid and Pimm and Harrison each picked up three points to push the Ontario lead to 9.5-.5, meaning New York would have to win the remaining three out right to win the title. They would take the third match 2-1 over the team of Kyrinis and Steinberg, but the single point was enough to secure the title for Ontario. The Ontario teams of Hayward and Hedges-McKinnon and Koselek and Smurlick would go on to win the remaining two matches outright resulting in the 17.5-2.5 Ontario win.
