Rules of Golf


As the governing body of golf in Canada, Golf Canada holds the exclusive right to govern, publish and distribute the Rules of Golf in Canada and therefore within the province of Manitoba.  For more information about the Rules of Golf, including rules resources and information on the 2019 Rules Modernization Initiative, please visit the Golf Canada website.

  • Public Sessions

    All sessions are complimentary for Golf Canada/Manitoba members. If you would like to attend any of these sessions please email your name and email address to Amy at Amy@golfmb.ca.

    We will need a minimum of 30 attendees for each of these sessions to go ahead.

  • Member Club Sessions

    As part of your Golf Manitoba membership, we would be happy to set up a rules session at any Golf Manitoba member club.  For details, please email Director of Competitions Lisa Andersen.

  • Level 1

    Level 1 focuses on easy ways to learn the basics of the Rules of Golf with its main interest on Etiquette, the principle definitions and commonly encountered situations on the course.

    Level 1 is available online and students will be able to test their knowledge by taking the review questions at the end of each section before attempting the online Level 1 Exam.

  • Provincial Certification

    This is the “Provincial Level” and typically involves a two and a half day seminar conducted by Golf Manitoba.  The focus will begin to look at the more important playing Rules in detail.

    This provincial certification is designed for individuals with an active involvement as a tournament referee, or a desire to have such an involvement and PGA members.

    Pre-requisite:

    • has achieved 85% or better on the Level 1 Online Exam.

    Requirements to be Provincially Certified:

    • Attend and achieve a minimum of 80% on the Provincial exam, administered by Golf Manitoba.
    • Complete 50 hours of on-course experience as a Referee.
    • Complete an additional 10 hours accompanying a Nationally certified Referee at a championship.

    Information & Registration

  • National Certification

    Seminars will be conducted by Golf Canada. It serves to give guidance and advice on refereeing at the highest level.

    This national certification is intended for experienced referees who wish to improve both their technical and practical knowledge as a referee.

    Pre-requisite:

    • Provincial level certification (written and practical components completed).

    Requirements to be Nationally Certified:

    • Attend and achieve a minimum of 80% on the National level exam, administered by Golf Canada.
    • Complete 100 hours of on-course experience as a Referee, including 10 of those hours accompanying a current Nationally certified Referee.
