Uxbridge, ON – The last stop on this week’s busy coverage of championship play is the Ontario Senior Men’s Better-Ball Championship at Brampton Golf Club.
Celebrating their centennial anniversary in 2021, the timeless parkland creation is excited to welcome competitors to the classic course. Hosting for the sixth time in the past seven years, Head Golf Professional Patrick Yashar, expressed that “the club is very pleased to continue to host and support this championship. The golf course is in great shape. The greens will be smooth, and the rough is fairly thick.” The meandering fairways into a river valley below, will be a “fair but difficult test of golf that will challenge all competitors”.
With the return of the championship after no tournament was held in 2020, the defending champions from 2019, Bruno Ardito and Gary Parker (Brampton GC), return to defend their title on home soil. Also in the mix could be 2017 champions, Frank Morris (Cutten Fields) & Tim Lee (Public Player). The winning duo will need consistent play and strong teamwork to walk away with the coveted hardware.

About the Ontario Senior Men’s Better-Ball Championship
The Ontario Senior Men’s Better-Ball Championship was first contested in 1982. It is open to players aged 55 and older as of the date of the tournament. The championship trophy was originally donated by the Oakdale Golf & Country Club, who annually hosted many Men’s Better-Ball Championships. Notable champions include Ontario Golf Hall of Famers Nick Westlock and Stu Hamilton.

Uxbridge, ON – The next stop on Golf Ontario’s fall coverage of the 2021 championship season is the Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ and Girls’ Match Play Championship at Tangle Creek Golf and Country Club from September 21-23.
Since opening in 2002, Tangle Creek has gained recognition as Barrie’s #1 public golf facility and one of the premier golf courses in the Greater Toronto Area. General Manager, Richard Edmonds, explained that “Tangle Creek is excited to be hosting the Ontario Junior (U19) Boys and Girls Match Play Championship. Our club is dedicated to growing the game through allowing access to our course for events such as the provincial match play championship.” With an all bent grass layout combining the best characteristics of classic and links style courses, the course “will play hard and fast and the green speed will be quick, especially with all the undulations. The course becomes even more difficult when the wind blows. This will have a huge impact on the club selection during the competitors’ rounds.”
The match play format for the boys will consist of a split tee start for the first match, with the top ten seeds getting a bye to the round of 32. The round of 32 will take place in the afternoon, following the girls round of 32. Wednesday morning will see the round of 16 take place, with quarter-final matches in the afternoon. Thursday has action from the semi-final matches and the final match of two contending for the championship.
The junior girls will start with the round of 32 on Tuesday afternoon, with the round of 16 and quarter-final matches taking place on Wednesday. Semi-final matches will start on Thursday morning, with the final round of the two remaining competitors playing in the afternoon for the match play title.
Action from Tangle Creek will get underway at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 21st, with the Boys teeing it up first. The Girls take to the course at 12:30 p.m.. About the Ontario Junior Boys & Girls (U19) Championship
The Junior Boys’ Match Play Championship has been contested since 1998 featuring Ontario’s top 16 amateur male golfers age 18 and under. The field is determined by results from four qualifiers. Notable past champions include Matt McQuillan, Justin Shin, Stephane Dubois, and Jon Boncoddo.
The Ontario Junior (U19) Girls Match Play Championship is contested annually and features Ontario’s top 16 amateur female golfers age 18 and under. Players can earn their way into the championship through the Jr. Girls Spring Classic and the Ontario Jr. Girls Championship. Notable past champions include Alena Sharp, Stefi Markovich, Christina Yoon, Elizabeth Tong and Grace St-Germain.

Uxbridge, ON — On Monday, September 20th, the prestigious Ladies GC of Toronto welcomes the Ontario Women’s Four-Ball Championship. The field of 84 talented players of all ages, playing in twosomes, will take to the challenging course in hopes of leaving as champions.
Notables in the field include Terrill Samuel (2021 Women’s Mid-Am Champion, 2020 Senior Women’s Champion), Emily Zhu (2018 Junior Spring Classic Champion, Team Canada National Junior Squad), and past champions of the event including Ivy Steinberg, Marion Reid, Debbie Court, and Leslie Ferrari.
A Stanley Thompson design, the 18-hole course from the back tees is just over 6,000 yards. It’s long and narrow fairways, and small greens make it no easy task to perform well. The prestigious course located in Thornhill is “thrilled to be hosting this year’s Women’s Four-Ball Championship,” expressed Jaime Steedman, Head Golf Professional of Ladies GC of Toronto. “It’s always exciting to welcome some of the best golfers in the province to Ladies’, and showcase the incredible mid-September course conditions we’ve been enjoying.” Steedman added, “the club is fresh off hosting the PGA of Ontario Women’s Championship (Sept 13) and the course is in the best shape I’ve seen it, and I am thrilled that the players will get to enjoy it in peak form.”
Samuel, Reid, Steinberg, and the rest of the field take to the course starting at 9am. The duo who can handle the tough conditions and tight greens the best, will leave after 18 holes with some special hardware in their possession. First played in 1953, the Ontario Women’s Four-Ball Championship is contested annually and features two-woman teams competing in a better-ball 18-hole format. In total, 46 teams and 92 players took part in the 2018 event.

Tottenham, ON – The final round of the 2021 Ontario Disability Championship was greeted by beautiful weather today, as competitors took to the stunning Legacy course at Woodington Lake Golf Club. Returning to defend their titles and walking away as 3-peat champions, is both Natasha Stasiuk (Heron Point Golf Links) and Kurtis Barkley (Cedar Glen GC).
With her lowest round of the championship, Stasiuk shot a 92 to secure the title with an overall 188. Silver medalist Tess Trojan (Public Player) also had a strong round, tackling a couple of holes that were giving her a challenge in round one. Taking home the bronze medal following her first provincial championship is Samantha Lemieux (Hamilton G&CC), who bravely took on the challenging course with the support of her playing partners.
In the post win interview, Stasiuk felt confident heading into the championship this week. “My scores weren’t as strong as I know I can play, but I knew I could accomplish it.” Disappointed in her putting, Stasiuk commented that “the greens are very hard to play on.” Barkley and Stasiuk actually discussed how challenging the greens were following the practice round on Tuesday. Stasiuk added that she would love to have more female competitors in the event. “There was a girl from England who completed a couple of years ago, so it would be nice to see more players from around the world.” Keeping a level head over challenging conditions, Stasiuk was just happy she got out to play golf with her dad as caddy. The next championship Stasiuk will be competing in is the inaugural Canadian All Abilities Championship, taking place next week at Humber Valley Golf Course.
After firing two-over in today’s final round, Barkley finishes just six-strokes ahead of silver medalist Russell Aide (Public Player). Aide, a Bantam aged player, tied with Barkley for the low round of the day after shooting a stellar 74. Oshawa Golf and Curling Club’s Geoffrey Beecroft finished in the bronze medalist position with an overall 160.
When asked if this year’s championship win feels any different, Barkley expressed that “today and yesterday was a challenge all together. It was a grind from the first shot till the end because this course can just take good shots and eat them up. You’ve got to take the good with the bad and just play one shot at a time.” Barkley said the overall course conditions were great, but “the greens are very tough for the speeds they play at.” Playing three times a week, Barkley’s motto is to take it one shot at a time. “That’s the beauty of golf, every shot is different.” This year Barkley qualified for the EDGA Dubai Finale, taking place alongside the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai in November. We wish him the best of luck in Dubai and at the inaugural Canadian All Abilities Championship, which he’ll be attending as well.
We would also like to highlight those who placed in the Men’s and Women’s Net Stableford divisions. Finishing in a tie for the gold medal is defending net Stableford champion, Gary Bos (Public Player), and silver medalist in the gross stroke play, Russell Aide (Public Player). Bronze medalist of both gross stroke and net Stableford divisions is Geoffrey Beecroft (Oshawa G&CC). On the women’s side, Tess Trojan secures her defending net Stableford champion title, with silver medalist Samantha Lemieux (Hamilton G&CC) finishing just eight points back. Natasha Stasiuk (Heron Point GL), winner of the gross stroke play, takes home the bronze medalist position. Springfield, ON – Day 2 of the 2021 BAKA Ontario Public Amateur Championship saw some spectacular golf at Tarandowah Golfers Club. 3 winners were crowned today, with Robert McLean taking the A flight with a gross score of +4 (144). Joel Niles won the B flight with a net score of even par (140) and Jeff Roberts won the C flight in a playoff with a 2-under (138)
The overall champion and A flight winner was Robert McLean who fired a spectacular 1-under 69 which included 4 birdies and just 3 bogeys. When asked about his winning performance after the round, McLean enthused “I felt great, a good front nine yesterday and a bad back nine, but I wanted to come out strong today. I knew putting was going to be key today and I showed up 45 minutes early to focus on my putting and it paid off. The course was really great with greens running very true”
The B flight came down to the wire and Joel Niles came out on top with a 2-day total of even par (140). Tied for second only 1 stroke back were Colin Edwards and Kyle Stolys who both carded a 2 day total of 1-over (141). The win for Niles was a result of a very strong day 2 net score of 5-under 65 which enabled him to jump 9 spots in the standings. Niles was thrilled with the win saying “My driving was the key for me today. Yesterday I was spraying it a little bit off of the tee but today I was very solid and kept my tee shots on the fairway which really helped with this course”. Niles also attributed the win “to my wife who showed up on the back nine and was my good luck charm, being Irish and all”
A playoff was needed to crown the C flight champion. Jeff Roberts and Mike Murphy finished regulation play with identical 2-under (138) scores and went to a 3-hole playoff. Both players were lights out in the playoff with Roberts’ firing 3 pars to take the championship. Finishing in 3rd at even par (140) was Andrew Schlegel with a sizzling net 64 on day 2. Roberts’ was very happy with his win, saying “that while I hit the ball well, it was my putting who was the star today. The course was great and making some great up and downs with strong putting was key”

About The Baka Public Amateur Championship
The Baka Ontario Public Amateur Championship was first played in 1958 at Don Valley Golf Club. Past winners include: Ken Trowbridge (1970), 2018 Ontario Golf Hall of Fame inductee Dave Bunker (2009, 2010) and Craig Loughry who has won a record four times (1997, 2001, 2005, 2006). Play of the tournament was suspended from 1984-1995. Mill Run Golf and Country Club (Uxbridge, ON) has hosted the tournament a record 9 times.

Bath, ON – Early heavy fog delayed a dramatic final round of the Ontario Senior Men’s Championship, from Loyalist Golf & Country Club. An hour delay exactly, saw the men start at 9:00 am before being able to tackle the challenging course on their quest for gold. That quest came down to a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to decide our champion.
Ashley Chinner (Coppinwood) fought back from a four-stroke deficit, behind 2020 Champion Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club), to drain his birdie putt on 18 and claim the prestigious title. Chinner recorded a strong three-under (69) to catch and surpass Bunker, who along with third place finisher Robert Cowan (Westmount G&CC), shot a two-over (74). He gained momentum on the back nine with three birdies over his last seven holes.
Following a silver medalist finish in 2020, Chinner said it “feels really good” to win a championship. “It’s been a while since I’ve won anything, so this really means a lot. I’m very happy.” Chinner spoke about silver medallist Bunker, adding “I so enjoy playing with Dave. He’s such a great golfer and is never out of it. He has one of the best short games I’ve ever seen”. On his own game he explained “I tried to give myself birdie opportunities and they came at clutch moments. I started to hit the ball good on the last six holes after a nice three wood on 12.
As well as crowning the Ontario Senior Men’s Champion, we also saw hardware handed out for the age 65 and over category, and age 70+ divisions. Ronald James White (St. George’s &CC) captured the 65 and over division, while Kerry Short (Cherry Hill Club) won the 70 and over division.

Conducted since 1936, the Ontario Senior Men’s Championship event features Ontario’s best male amateur golfers aged 55 and over, competing over 54 holes of stroke play competition.
Canadian and Ontario Golf Hall of Fame member Nick Weslock, one of Canada’s greatest amateurs of the century, won the event a record 11 times between 1968 and 1980. Other notable past champions include Stu Hamilton (2001, 2006), Mike Jackson (2010, 2011 and 2013) and Ontario Golf Hall of Fame member Warren Sye in 2012.

Tottenham, ON – Following a night of heavy rainfall, competitors took to the stunning Legacy course at Woodington Lake Golf Club for round one of the 3rd annual championship. With just two rounds of competitive play, athletes had to play smart to take advantage of the leaderboard early.
Coming out of the gates strong is both defending champions, Natasha Stasiuk (Heron Point GC) and Kurtis Barkley (Cedar Glen GC). On the women’s side, Stasiuk holds a seven-stroke lead over second place Tess Trojan (Public Player). In third after a tough front nine, is Hamilton G&CC’s Samantha Lemieux.
Over on the Men’s side, Barkley shares the lead with Geoffrey Beecroft (Oshawa G&CC) following a round of 77. Just one-stroke back sits third place holder, Jason Swerdfeger (Public Player), with a six-over day.
A Net Stableford champion for both Men’s and Women’s divisions will be crowned as well. Round one leaderboard shows Jason Swerdfeger in first, with a tie between Geoffrey Beecroft and Gary Bos. Women’s Net Stableford has Tess Trojan in the lead, with Samantha Lemieux in second, and Natasha Stasiuk in third.

Bath, ON – Overnight rain and thunderstorms fortunately cleared for round two of the Ontario Senior Men’s Championship, from Loyalist Golf & Country Club. The sun did its part to dry up the challenging course as the heat and play rose through the day, as players fought to climb the standings and catch our leaders.
The 2020 Ontario Senior Men’s Champion, Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club), continued his fierce play shooting a brilliant seven-under (65), including six birdies on the back nine to hold a four-stroke lead heading into tomorrow’s final round. Once again nipping at his heels is Ashley Chinner (Coppinwood), who fired a strong four-under (68) including 4 birdies on his last six holes. Round of the day and lowest of the tournament so far, belonged to Robert G. Cowan (Westmount G&CC), who exploded on the scene with a seven-under stretch over eight holes to shoot an incredible eight-under (65). Brian Humphrys (The Pulpit Club) also had a strong round of three-under (69) on the day to find himself in fourth.
After the cut tonight, the low 48 scorers and anyone tying for 48th place will continue play tomorrow. The championship will see an Ontario Senior Men’s Champion crowned, as well as a champion for the age 65 and over, and age 70 and over divisions. Chris Kertsos (Coppinwood GC) currently leads in the 65 and over division. Kerry Short (Cherry Hill Club) holds the lead early in the 70 and over division.

Springfield, ON – Tarandowah Golfers Club proves a worthy host for Ontario’s top Public Players, as Brooks and Sinden (+1) sit tied for the lead in the A flight gross competition. Penney (-3) leads the B flight net competition, while Martin, Roberts, and Scanlon (-1) hold a 3-way tie for C Flight lead.
Open only to players of the Golf Ontario Public Player Program and members of a semi-public golf course, the Baka Ontario Public Amateur Championship presented by Triple Bogey, has players competing in three separate flights. Players in the A flight are competing in a gross competition, while the B and C flights are competing in a net competition. Players in the B flight will also be eligible for the overall A flight, as they play from the same tees.
On a perfect day for golf, the players took to the beautiful links-style masterpiece that is Tarandowah Golfers Club. Protected by hidden bunkers and wrinkled greens, players in all flights had to be creative with their shots. Competitors who were able to stay out of trouble were able to score well.
- In the gross A flight, Michael Brooks and Griffin Sinden were able to post +1 (71) scores to take the day one lead, ahead of 3 players (Chad Cowan, Devin Bartlett, and Peter Willis) close behind at +2 (72).
- In the net B flight, Eric Penney fired an impressive 3-under (67) to take the lead, followed closely by 3 players (Kyle Stolys, Derek Baird, and Colin Edwards) who carded even par scores (70).
- For the net C flight, 3 players were able to post net scores of 1-under (69) with Ben Martin, Jeff Roberts, and Vincent Scanlon sharing the round one lead, one stroke ahead of Mike Murphy.
Tomorrow’s final round will begin at 8:00am with the C-flight going off first, followed by the B and then A flights to determine our winners. For scoring, make sure to visit our Golf Genius page. About The Baka Public Amateur Championship
The Baka Public Amateur Championship was first played in 1958 at Don Valley Golf Club. Past winners include: Ken Trowbridge (1970), 2018 Ontario Golf Hall of Fame inductee Dave Bunker (2009, 2010) and Craig Loughry who has won a record four times (1997, 2001, 2005, 2006). Play of the tournament was suspended from 1984-1995. Mill Run Golf and Country Club (Uxbridge, ON) has hosted the tournament a record 9 times.
The Baka Public Amateur Championship provides the perfect opportunity for those interested in trying a competitive tournament while providing gross and net flights. This allows higher handicap players to play against players in their handicap grouping.

Bath, ON – It was a cool calm day to start round one of the Ontario Senior Men’s Championship, at the beautiful Loyalist Golf & Country Club. While the sun showed up on occasion, players battled mostly windy, cooler conditions for the remainder of the day.
Two very familiar faces came out of the gates on fire; 2020 Ontario Senior Men’s Champion Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club) and 2020 silver medalist Ashley Chinner (Coppinwood). Bunker fired a stellar six-under (66) included 6 birdies, two bogeys and an impressive eagle on the fifth hole to claim top spot on the early leaderboard with Chinner right behind him once again. Chinner respectively shot a beautiful five-under round (67) on the strength of five birdies to sit just one stroke behind Bunker. Joe Miszk also of (Cherry Hill Club) recorded a brilliant three-under (69) late in the day to claim third place alone currently. Also under par after one-under (71) scores are John Zdonek (Pointe West Golf Club) and Phil Reddon (Heron Point Golf Links)
After 36 holes, the low 48 scorers and anyone tying for 48th place will continue play. The championship will see an Ontario Senior Men’s Champion crowned, as well as a champion for the age 65 and over, and age 70 and over divisions. Don Mclean (Greystone Golf Club) and Glen Chandler (Craigowan Golf Club) currently lead in the 65 and over division. Chandler also has an early hold of the 70 and over title.
